No doubt you’d heard the terms target audience, target market and niche. What about, avatar, ideal customer profile or dot?

We know the names it goes by, however have you really taken the time to work out who your target audience is?

On the most part, new businesses go in with the perception that they are selling to everybody. As the saying goes, “If you’re selling to everyone, you’re selling to no one.” This is because your marketing message is too complicated as you’re trying to be all things to all people. 

Here’s an example. Imagine offering a high-end corporate fashion label. There’s not a lot of benefit of trying to target teenagers, stay at home mums or those living in rural locations. They don’t face the same fashion concerns that an inner city lawyer or account executive would consider a priority i.e. Looking successful, highly professional and elegant.

Documenting your target audience profile is a great first step. This will allow you to tailor your marketing and advertising to match the tastes of your target audience. Ideally, everything you put out, in the name of your business, will appeal to and address the concerns, pet-peeves, priorities and preferences of your target audience.
